Area: ~2330 x 2000 km
Dimensions: 2030 x 1354 rows/columns
File Size: ~6 MB compressed
Resolution: 1-kilometer
Projection: None (swath data)
LST Data Type: 16-bit unsigned integer
Emissivity Data Type: 8-bit unsigned integer
Data Format: HDF-EOS
Science Data Sets (SDS HDF Layers): 9
The
above false-color image shows the LSTs at clear-sky pixels in the MOD11_L2
product retrieved from MODIS data of 4th April 2000 over the western
United States. Areas in black are ocean (on the left) and clouds (in
the upper portion). It seems that the low-temperature pixels scattered
over the upper left portion are under influence of cloud contaminations
Product Description
The level-2 MODIS
global Land Surface Temperature (LST) and Emissivity daily data are
retrieved as 1-kilometer pixels by the generalized split-window LST
algorithm. Optimum use of the LST algorithm is gained by separating
ranges of atmospheric column water vapor and lower boundary air surface
temperature into tractable sub-ranges. Surface emissivities in bands
31 and 32 are estimated from land cover types.
MOD11_L2 is swath
data obtained in 5-minute sensor collection periods and is comprised
of LST, quality assessment, error estimation, observation time, view
angle, emissivities in bands 31 and 32, and the geographic coordinates
of every five scan lines and samples. MOD11_L2 is provided as a daily
unprojected level-2 product.
Version-5 MODIS/Terra Land Surface Temperature/Emissivity products
are Validated Stage 1, meaning that accuracy has been estimated using
a small number of independent measurements obtained from selected locations
and time periods and ground-truth/field program efforts. Although there
may be later improved versions, these data are ready for use in scientific
publications.
