Mineral dust blown into the air can impact Earth’s systems in many ways. NASA has started work on a new Earth Venture-Instrument 4 (EVI-4) mission called the Earth Surface Mineral Dust Source Investigation (EMIT). This mission aims to comprehensively measure the mineral composition of dust from Earth’s arid land regions – a source of mineral dust in the air – using a unique NASA-invented imaging spectrometer. The sensor will be aboard the International Space Station in the future, but EMIT’s official website is now available. To learn more about this mission, visit: https://earth.jpl.nasa.gov/emit/. EMIT data will be distributed by NASA’s LP DAAC.
