Aqua Satellite Anomaly

By: LP DAAC

On August 16, 2020 at 09:26:40 UTC, the data formatter for the solid state recorder aboard the Aqua satellite began exhibiting anomalous behavior during playback operations. NASA engineers were able to successfully diagnose and recover from the data formatter anomaly on September 2, 2020 with nominal science data collection resuming at 20:12 UTC.

The Aqua satellite anomaly resulted in a data acquisition gap from August 16 through September 2, 2020 for LP DAAC Aqua and Combined Terra+Aqua Moderate Resolution Imaging Spectroradiometer (MODIS) data products. A review is underway to determine if steps taken to minimize data loss were successful.
