Version 2.6 of the Application for Extracting and Exploring Analysis Ready Samples (AppEEARS) has been released with three major updates.

AppEEARS now provides temporal, spatial, and layer subsetting capabilities for five Soil Moisture Active Passive (SMAP) data products, distributed by the National Snow and Ice Data Center (NSIDC) DAAC. The products are:

  • Enhanced L3 Radiometer Global Daily 9 km EASE-Grid Soil Moisture (SPL3SMP_E.001)
  • L3 Radiometer Global Daily 36 km EASE-Grid Soil Moisture (SPL3SMP.004)
  • L4 Global Daily 9 km Carbon Net Ecosystem Exchange (SPL4CMDL.003)
  • L4 Global 9 km Surface and Root Zone Soil Moisture Geophysical Data (SPL4SMGP.003)
  • L3 Radiometer Northern Hemisphere Daily 36 km EASE-Grid Freeze/Thaw State (SPL3FTP.001)

Version 5 Terra, Aqua, and Combined Terra and Aqua MODIS data products are no longer available in AppEEARS, with a few exceptions. Version 5.1 of Terra and Aqua Combined MODIS Yearly Land Cover (MCD12Q1) and Version 5.5 of Terra MODIS Yearly Net Primary Production (MOD17A3) will continue to be available in AppEEARS until their Version 6 counterparts have been released. Version 5 Terra MODIS and Aqua MODIS Daily (MxD10A1) and 8-day (MxD10A2) snow cover products, distributed by the NSIDC DAAC, will also continue to be available, until further notice.

This release also implements an updated policy for retention of request outputs. Area and point sample request outputs will now only be available for 60 days after completion before they are auto-deleted. The request parameters will still be viewable on the “Explore” page and can be reprocessed if needed.

About AρρEEARS

AρρEEARS offers a simple and efficient way to perform data access and transformation processes by enabling users to download only the data they need. AρρEEARS provides access to a wide range of environmental variables derived from sources such as the Moderate Resolution Imaging Spectroradiometer (MODIS) onboard the Terra and Aqua satellites, as well as population information from the Gridded Population of the World (GPW) Version 4 collection.

A complete listing of data products available in AρρEEARS can be found here. Additional resources for using AρρEEARS are available on the LP DAAC E-Learning page.
