By: LP DAAC

The Land Processes Distributed Active Archive Center (LP DAAC) is pleased to announce the availability of the Visible Infrared Imaging Radiometer Suite (VIIRS) Thermal Anomalies/Fire (VNP14) Version 1 data product, produced by the National Aeronautics and Space Administration (NASA). The VNP14 data are 6-minute swaths that delivers night and day observations on a daily basis at 750 meter spatial resolution. This dataset provides observation of fire activity as they are occurring.

VIIRS is one of five instruments on-board the Suomi National Polar-orbiting Partnership (Suomi NPP) satellite, which launched in October 2011. Suomi NPP is the first in a series of four Joint Polar Satellite System (JPSS) satellites scheduled for the future.

VIIRS extends the legacy of NASA’s Earth Observing System Terra and Aqua satellites’ Moderate Resolution Imaging Spectroradiometer (MODIS) sensor. VIIRS global change observation products are being generated in a MODIS-like format using modified MODIS algorithms.

The VIIRS Moderate Resolution Terrain Correction Geolocation (VNP03MODLL) Version 1 data product has also been released in conjunction with the VNP14 data product. The VNP03MODLL swath data product is based on 6-minute increments, similar to the VNP14. VNP03MODLL provides the relevant latitude and longitude layers necessary for applying accurate geolocation to VNP14 swath data.

The LP DAAC will continue to make future announcements as additional Suomi NPP NASA VIIRS data products become available.
