By: LP DAAC

On August 3, 2021, Suomi National Polar-orbiting Partnership (Suomi NPP) lost its nominal mission pointing status and instruments aboard the satellite were put into safe mode. All science data acquisitions, including the Visible Infrared Imaging Radiometer Suite (VIIRS), were disabled at 12:46 UTC on August 3, 2021. The spacecraft mission team has restored the spacecraft to nominal mission pointing status and is working to recover all of the instruments. An update will be posted when the recovery is complete and science data collection has resumed.

Update: Land SIPS has started generating Suomi NPP VIIRS products, post recovery at 1600 UTC August 4, 2021. However, VIIRS instrumentation are still under review by the VIIRS Calibration Support Team (VCST) and may not have reached optimal temperature following recovery. A final update from the VCST is expected soon to confirm the final status of the VIIRS instrumentation and the products. Users are urged to maintain caution while using VIIRS data acquired 12:46 UTC August 3, 2021, onwards. For more detailed findings, please refer to the preliminary analysis from the VCST.
