This false-colored MOD11A2 image shows the 8-day average values of daytime clear-sky LSTs retrieved from MODIS data in the period of April 30 May 7, 2000 over the eastern coast of the United States.
The level-3 MODIS global Land Surface Temperature (LST) and Emissivity 8-day data are composed from the daily 1-kilometer LST product (MOD11A1) and stored on a 1-km Sinusoidal grid as the average values of clear-sky LSTs during an 8-day period.
MOD11A2 is comprised of daytime and nighttime LSTs, quality assessment, observation times, view angles, bits of clear sky days and nights, and emissivities estimated in Bands 31 and 32 from land cover types.
Version-5 MODIS/Terra Land Surface Temperature/Emissivity products are validated to Stage 2, which means that their accuracy has been assessed over a widely distributed set of locations and time periods via several ground-truth and validation efforts. The QC science data sets in this product (QC_Day, QC_Night) provide the user with information on algorithm results that can be viewed in a spatial context for each pixel. The QC information tells if algorithm results were nominal, abnormal, or if other defined conditions were encountered for a pixel. The QC information should be used to help determine the usefulness of the LST data for a user's needs. The QC information can be extracted by reading the flags stored in an 8-bit unsigned integer. See Table 1 (QC_Day, QC_Night) below.
NOTE: there is no FillValue for the QC SDS. This SDS should be used together with the LST SDS. If LST has FillValue 0, the 0-1 bits in QC have values of 10 or 11, other bit fields with 0 as undefined.
