Find and Use GEDI, You Will—Getting Started with Global Ecosystems Dynamics Investigation (GEDI) Lidar Data

Details:

Published: June 30, 2020

During this webinar, we provide an introduction to NASA’s GEDI mission and GEDI datasets and show you how to get started with GEDI data using the NASA Land Processes Distributed Active Archive Center (LP DAAC) web service, data prep script, and Jupyter Notebook Python tutorial series.

NASA’s Global Ecosystem Dynamics Investigation (GEDI) mission was launched on December 5, 2018 and is attached to the International Space Station. GEDI is a full-waveform lidar instrument that produces high-resolution laser ranging observations of the 3-dimensional structure of the Earth’s surface. GEDI collects data globally between 51.6° N and 51.6° S latitudes at the highest resolution and densest sampling of any light detection and ranging (lidar) instrument in orbit to date. GEDI aims to characterize ecosystem structure and dynamics to enable radically improved quantification and understanding of Earth’s carbon and water cycles, habitat, and biodiversity. NASA’s Land Processes Distributed Active Archive Center (LP DAAC) has begun distributing GEDI Level 1B and Level 2 products, which include geolocated full waveform measurements (L1B), elevation and height metrics (L2A), and canopy cover and vertical profile metrics (L2B), all provided as ~30 m footprints. In addition to learning about the mission, tune in to learn about GEDI Level 1B-2 products and where to find additional resources for getting started with GEDI data.
