Recent satellite maneuvers have signaled the eventual retirement of the Terra and Aqua satellites along with the Advanced Spaceborne Thermal Emission and Reflection Radiometer (ASTER) and Moderate Resolution Imaging Spectroradiometer (MODIS) sensors. This retirement will allow for the Visible Infrared Imaging Radiometer Suite (VIIRS) instruments of the Joint Polar Satellite System to take the lead in providing critical Earth system observations at moderate spatial resolution. A recently released article from NASA Earthdata explains more.
