The Land Processes Distributed Active Archive Center (LP DAAC) is pleased to announce availability of the new NASA-produced Suomi National Polar-orbiting Partnership (Suomi NPP) Visible Infrared Imaging Radiometer Suite (VIIRS) Land Surface Temperature and Emissivity (LST&E) Version 1 data products. The VIIRS LST&E data products (VNP21) are developed synergistically with the Moderate Resolution Imaging Spectroradiometer (MODIS) LST&E Version 6 products using the same input atmospheric products and algorithmic approach. The overall objective for NASA VIIRS products is to ensure the algorithms and products are compatible with the MODIS Terra and Aqua algorithms to promote the continuity of the Earth Observation System (EOS) mission.

VIIRS is one of five instruments on-board the Suomi National Polar-orbiting Partnership (Suomi NPP) satellite, which launched in October of 2011. Suomi NPP is the predecessor to the next generation of the Joint Polar Satellite System (JPSS). NOAA-20, formerly JPSS-1, launched in November 2017, is the first in this series of four satellites; plans are underway for JPSS-2 to launch in 2022.
