Suomi NPP Enters Safe Mode

The Suomi-National Polar-orbiting Partnership (SNPP) spacecraft entered a non-nominal state on 07/26/2022 at 16:24:49 UTC, after which all Stored Memory Data (SMD) and telemetry data were inaccessible. The root cause continues to be investigated, subsequent contacts have confirmed that the spacecraft and all instruments, including VIIRS, are currently in a safe mode state.

Engineering will continue to restore all instruments and science data to an operational state once a plan forward has been determined. The impacts from this event will affect all SNPP VIIRS operational archives. The data loss from this event will not be recoverable, and no forward processed data will be available until SNPP recovers from safe mode.

An update on the data recovery will be announced via news announcements on the LP DAAC website. Subscribe to the LP DAAC’s listserv by sending a blank email to lpdaac-join@lists.nasa.gov to receive listserv messages from the LP DAAC regarding recent updates.
