Release of GEDI Version 2 Data Products

The LP DAAC is pleased to announce the availability of the Global Ecosystem Dynamics Investigation (GEDI) Version 2 Level 1B Geolocated Waveform Data, Level 2A Elevation and Height Metrics Data, and Level 2B Canopy Cover and Vertical Profile Metrics Data for April 18, 2019 through October 16, 2019.

Improvements for Version 2 are listed below:

• Metadata have been updated to include spatial coordinates.
• Granule size has been reduced from one full ISS orbit to four segments per orbit.
• Filename has been updated to include segment number and version number.
• Improved geolocation for an orbital segment.
• Added elevation from the SRTM digital elevation model for comparison.
• Modified the method to predict an optimum algorithm setting group per laser shot.
• Added additional land cover datasets related to phenology, urban infrastructure, and water persistence.
• Added selected_mode_flag dataset to root beam group using selected algorithm.
• Removed shots when the laser is not firing.
• Modified file name to include segment number and dataset version.

Users can now access the data products through the Data Pool and NASA’s Earthdata Search.

The "GEDI L1-L2 Data Resources, Access, and Visualization Demo" given as a part of a NASA ARSET LIDAR and SIF training series is a great resource that provides information on updates to GEDI Version 2, and a live demo of how to spatially query and subset GEDI Version 2 data in NASA's Earthdata Search Client.

The GEDI Version 2 Spatial Querying and Subsetting Quick Guide demonstrates how to find and subset GEDI Version 2 granules using NASA’s Earthdata Search.
