Release of VIIRS LAI/FPAR Products

Jun 05, 2018
By: LP DAAC

The Land Processes Distributed Active Archive Center (LP DAAC) is pleased to announce availability of the new NASA produced Visible Infrared Imaging Radiometer Suite (VIIRS) Leaf Area Index (LAI)/Fraction of Photosynthetically Active Radiation (FPAR) Version 1 data product (VNP15A2H). This level 3, 500 meter data product provides the best pixel available from all acquisitions within the 8-day period. Information from these data is used to study the structure and energy absorption of broadleaf and coniferous canopies.

A citation containing the Digital Object Identifier (DOI) for the dataset is provided below.

The data are available for download through the LP DAAC Data Pool, DAAC2Disk, and NASA’s Earthdata Search.

Additional VIIRS information:

VIIRS is one of five instruments on-board the Suomi National Polar-orbiting Partnership (Suomi NPP) satellite, which launched in October of 2011. Suomi NPP is the predecessor to the next generation of the Joint Polar Satellite System (JPSS). NOAA-20, formerly JPSS-1, launched in November 2017, is the first in this series of four satellites; plans are underway for JPSS-2 to launch in 2022.

VIIRS extends the legacy of NASA’s Earth Observing System Terra and Aqua Satellites’ Moderate Resolution Imaging Spectroradiometer (MODIS) sensor. VIIRS global change observation products are being generated in a MODIS-like format using modified MODIS algorithms. Additional VIIRS information can be found on the VIIRS Overview page.

The LP DAAC will continue to make future announcements as additional Suomi NPP NASA VIIRS data products become available.
