Release of VIIRS Vegetation Index Products

The Land Processes Distributed Active Archive Center (LP DAAC) is pleased to announce availability of the new NASA-produced Suomi National Polar-orbiting Partnership (S-NPP) Visible Infrared Imaging Radiometer Suite (VIIRS) Vegetation Indices Version 1 data products (VNP13s). These data products provide the best pixel available from all acquisitions within 16-day and monthly periods, at 500 meter, 1 kilometer, and 0.05 degree (5,600 meter) resolution. Information from these data products provides global vegetation metrics, which are useful for monitoring vegetation activity, distribution, and composition. These data products support phenology and change detection studies, and can used as a parameter for vegetation models.

Additional VIIRS information:

VIIRS is one of five instruments on-board the S-NPP satellite, which launched in October of 2011. S-NPP is the predecessor to the next generation of the Joint Polar Satellite System (JPSS). JPSS-1, launched in November 2017, is the first in this series of four satellites; plans are underway for JPSS-2 to launch in 2022.

VIIRS extends the legacy of NASA’s Earth Observing System Terra and Aqua Satellites’ Moderate Resolution Imaging Spectroradiometer (MODIS) sensor. VIIRS global change observation products are being generated in a MODIS-like format using modified MODIS algorithms. Additional VIIRS information can be found on the VIIRS Overview page.
